IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. There are many tests to assess the English proficiency of people, of which IELTS is the most well-known and accepted one globally. People who wish to work or study in English speaking countries have to prove their proficiency in English through undertaking this test. IELTS, which began in 1989, is owned by three organizations: The British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment English. IELTS has world-wide acceptance by employers, colleges, schools, universities and immigration organizations.
This standardized test uses four modules (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking) to clearly understand the practical ability of a person to use English in real life situations.
The candidate can choose either a pen and paper based exam or a computer based exam based on their preference. This applies only for the Listening, Reading and Writing modules. The Speaking test must be carried out face to face with a trained IELTS Examiner. While the paper based test takes around 13 days to publish the result, the computer based takes only 3-5 days.
The Pearson Test of English (PTE), is a computer based test for those who are from non-native English speaking countries who wish to study abroad. The test has four modules (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking) and is point based. The three major governments which accept PTE are Australian, New Zealand and the UK. The test is three hours long and is held in test centers. The speaking module is also system based and hence is done in front of the computer with headset. Your voice would be recorded and sent for evaluation. The exam can be booked 24 hours prior to the test date and one can get an unbiased result within 48 hours.
An Academic PTE is an English proficiency test for those who wish to travel abroad either for study or for work. The scores are accepted in countries like USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Singapore and New Zealand. The score is mainly required for immigration purposes and for admissions in universities in order to pursue abroad studies.
A General PTE is not used as a test for English language proficiency. Hence the scores of PTE General is not accepted for immigration or for higher education. Taking this test helps a person to understand their ability in handling the language. They can understand the areas where they need to improve.
